Environmental Audits
What is an Environmental Audit?
The environmental audit is an essential tool to know the reality, the problems and the priorities of the school in matters related to the conservation and improvement of the school and local environment. In addition, it will provide the basis for the creation of the Action Plan.
What is the importance of Environmental Audits?
Before starting to carry out environmental activities in your school or educational institution, you need to know the current environmental situation of the campus and the school community. Have well identified which are the environmental problems on which they should focus their efforts.
Environmental Audits will make it possible to establish which of these problems should be addressed more quickly. Also help identify the focal issues to work on during that school year.
.
Below you will be able to access two instruments created by Eco Escuelas Puerto Rico that will be used to carry out environmental audits. The instrument is aimed at schools from the pre-school level to the higher level. Within this guide you can find the format to carry out the Environmental Audits. If your school or educational institution covers all levels, you must complete the two Environmental Audits, one for each educational level.

How are Environmental Audits carried out?
The environmental committee should be responsible for establishing a strategy for conducting the audit and for keeping the entire school informed about the process and its results. It is important that students are primarily responsible for conducting the audit. These should be the protagonists of each stage of the audits.
.
One of the most important aspects of this step is ensuring that the results are well documented, displayed, and disseminated throughout the school community. A bulletin board, school magazine, or website are ideal places to publicize and share results. It is important to remember that the audits will be carried out TWO times a year. The mission of the second audit is to verify the progress they have made throughout the year.
.
If your school participates in the program for the first time, it must carry out an environmental audit that includes the six cross-cutting themes of Eco Escuelas de Puerto Rico:
Energy
Water
Solid Waste
Nature
Biodiversity
Sustaining Our World
Global citizenship
